Marine Protected Areas Strategy

The Department of Conservation and the Ministry of Fisheries have released the Marine Protected Areas - Draft Classification and Protection Standard document, dated June 2007.

Submissions have been requested from the public and final deadline for receiving submissions is the 31st August 2007.

 

2004

In November 2004 the Minister of Conservation provided a draft consultation document called the Marine Protected Area (MPA) Policy Statement and Implementation Plan developed by the Department of Conservation (DoC) and the Ministry of Fisheries.

In order to understand the strategy option4 have collated the information and documented the process as it has occurred.

Te Runanga a Iwi O Ngati Kahu of the far north endorse the joint MPA submission and reiterate the concerns relating to the omission of references to kaitiakitanga (guardship) and customary managment tools.

Please note: option4 did not submit to this process due to our resources being                devoted to other fisheries management processes. We have major concerns about this strategy and will be making more detailed comment in the near future.

Dept of Conservation
option4 received an invitation to attend a meeting jointly initiated by MFish and DoC to discuss the plan. Meeting was held in Wellington on 17 December 2004. The President of the NZBGFC and John Holdsworth attended to represent our non-commercial fishing interests.
