Thank you for your letter
of 22 December 2004, in which you requested a two month extension
to the deadline for submissions on the Marine Protected Areas Policy
Statement and Implementation Plan.
Late last year I was advised
by officials that a number of interests had requested additional
time for submissions. As a result of these calls, the Minister of
Fisheries and I agreed to extend the deadline for submissions to
28 February 2005. While this is not the date you requested, I consider
that sufficient time has now been provided to enable submissions
to be prepared and forwarded on this important matter.
I understand that interested
parties have received notification of this extension and media statements
have also been released providing notice of the extension to the
general public.
