Review of the Amateur Fishing Regulations

Regulation Review

The Ministry of Fisheries is currently undertaking a review of some aspects of the Amateur Fishing Regulations. MFish have released an Initial Position Paper (IPP) which covers the following:

  • Amendment to the scallop fishing season
  • Red gurnard, blue cod and trumpeter recreational size limits
  • Definition of 'take' when considering bag limits
  • Regulation 19A of the regulations

The (IPP) that includes the proposals for these regulations was released on 11th July 2006.

Ministers Decision 2006
Minimum size limits now apply to red gurnard and trumpeter. Changes to the scallop season on the north east coast have also been approved.

Submissions
The Marlborough Recreational Fishers Association do not support a minimum legal size for gurnard, but support commonsense management.

The NZ Recreational Fishing Council's letter to MFish in support of the regulation review process but they did not submit on specific proposals.

11 Sep 06

The Raglan Sport Fishing Club support a minimum legal size for gurnard and a shift in the scallop fishing season from 1 September to 31 March.

option4 and the New Zealand Big Game Fishing Council ask the Ministry why we are being asked to comment on specific regulations when there are more fundamental issues that need to be addressed.
