Three great events planned
for your enjoyment while you support the local effort to protect
our west coast.
*Popoto dance to
bring the message to Wellington*
Soul Speed, dance/theatre
troupe of Whaingaroa, is now working with WWF-NZ to stage a performance
of "Popoto Whakamiharo" at Te Papa in Wellington this
June. Chris Carter, among other govt officials, is to be invited.
The performance will include a presentation of all the cards and
letters of concern collected by the troupe from their performances
over the past two months at WOMAD, Soundsplash. Jambalya and the
Recycled Raft Race 2005.
To raise the money to get
to Wellington, Soul Speed is hosting three concerts at the Raglan
Town Hall. The ONE OCEAN PLANET OCEAN series starts 23rd April with
One Million Dollars (13 piece soul/Latin/funk) and Agua Menco (nouveau
flamenco) and a special performance of Popoto Whakamiharo (with
new scene about sand mining). On 21st May, dDub and DJ Dubhead brings
a night of dub/reggae/jazz fusion. This night is a
dance hall dress-up occasion.
A dance "Kaitiaki" will also be performed. The 10th of
June is Leila Adu, a jazz/world music vocalist with support from
former Trinity Roots musicians and Ishta, an ethnic groove group
featuring sitar, tabla, flute and sax. Tickets are $55 for
all three nights, $20 presales or $25 on the door. Organic food
as well as beer
and wine will be sold. Tickets
at United Video Raglan, info@raglan or from Soul Speed members.
There will be a display centre
at the concerts where you can sign cards, write a letter to ministers,
etc about the dolphins and the sand mining and other coastal issues.
To meet costs as well as raise funds, Soul Speed is aiming to fill
the hall for each concert (250 tickets). There are invites to perform
at other coastal centres in Auckland, Kawhia &
Taranaki, but all depends
on funding, sponsors and the success of these three nights. If you
or your business can be a sponsor, please contact the troupe. Everyone,
come along. Spread the word. Help bring the message to Wellington
in a way that can't be ignored.
