New
Marine Reserve At Waiheke
4
August 2005
Residents on Waiheke Island
in the Hauraki Gulf are welcoming a marine reserve that will protect
one of its largest estuaries.
The Department of Conservation
says a 690-hectare reserve at Te Matuku Bay means people can swim,
snorkel and picnic in the area, but may no longer catch fish or
collect shellfish.
The chairman of the Waiheke
Community Board, Ray Ericson, says the reserve has been discussed
for the past 10 years and to have it confirmed is delightful.
The boundaries of the marine
reserve are the high water mark around Te Matuku Bay and the area
outside the bay around Passage Rock.

information about this reserve can be found on the DoC website »
