Nugget Point
Balclutha: Otago scientists back the proposed
marine reserve at Nugget Point.
More than 30 scientists
from the University of Otago's marine science, zoology, botany
and surveying departments met Department of Conservation (Doc)
representatives this week to talk about the proposal.
Environmental consultants
and Ministry of Fisheries staff also attended the meeting. Several
scientists still want to see a larger reserve area, both along
the coastline and offshore.
Marine science department
head Associate Prof Mike Barker said while the proposed area would
be useful scientifically, a bigger area would be better.
Other leading scientists
and marine biologists echoed that view.
Senior marine science
lecturer Dr Steve Dawson said the reserve would have unexpected
benefits as well as probable increases in paua and crayfish numbers.
"For example, gillnetting
is a real problem for yellow-eyed penguins. By outlawing gillnets
in the reserve, the reserve can only help. While I and other scientists
would like a bigger reserve, the current proposal is a giant step
in the right direction."
Several scientists stressed
it was important to do thorough baseline studies before establishing
the reserve so change could be measured.
Doc will meet recreational
fishers in Balclutha tonight to discuss the proposed boundaries.
The meeting will be held at the South Otago Town and Country Club
at 7pm.
