Scientists at Otago University are welcoming plans to establish
the region's first marine reserve.
The Department of Conservation plans to set up the reserve at
Nugget Point, about 50km south of Dunedin.
The University's Associate Professor of Marine Biology, Mike
Barker, says more marine reserves are needed in the South Island.
Dr Barker says they replenish species both inside and outside
the reserve area which benefits conservationists, recreational
users and commercial fishers alike.
He says the reserve will also be useful for students researching
marine habitats at the University of Otago.
