reserve criticised

Kaka Point: The Department of Conservation (Doc)
has spent more than $150,000 working on its Nugget Point marine
reserve proposal and the figure is expected to top $200,000 before
the department makes a formal application to the Government.
Conservation Minister
Chris Carter confirmed Doc’s Otago staff have spent $151,673
on the proposal. This includes 5662 hours of staff time, while
contractors have been employed for 251 hours. Both figures are
for 2004 and 2005.
Staff wages and salaries
account for $96,379, while consultants have been paid $18,892.
Other costs include printing and publishing ($14,839), computer
leases ($5372), vehicle expenses ($4984) and $3581 on domestic
travel.
The list also includes
spending on areas like recruitment, accommodation, office supplies,
catering and running of public meetings.
