Kaka Point: The Department of Conservation (Doc) has spent more than $150,000 working on its Nugget Point marine reserve proposal and the figure is expected to top $200,000 before the department makes a formal application to the Government.

Conservation Minister Chris Carter confirmed Doc’s Otago staff have spent $151,673 on the proposal. This includes 5662 hours of staff time, while contractors have been employed for 251 hours. Both figures are for 2004 and 2005.

Staff wages and salaries account for $96,379, while consultants have been paid $18,892. Other costs include printing and publishing ($14,839), computer leases ($5372), vehicle expenses ($4984) and $3581 on domestic travel.

The list also includes spending on areas like recruitment, accommodation, office supplies, catering and running of public meetings.
