Kaka Point: A South Otago coastal guardians group
will move a step closer to reality next week when interested groups
meet to discuss its formation and how it might operate along the
southern coastline.
The group is being promoted
as an alternative to the Department of Conservation’s Nugget
Point marine reserve proposal.
Guardians spokesman Lionel
Mason said recreational and commercial fishing sectors, landowners,
iwi, scientists, Otago Conservation Board and the Royal Forest
and Bird Protection Society had been asked to nominate potential
representatives.
A meeting will be held
at the Kaka Point Hall next Thursday, to discuss the group and
adopt a mission statement.
