What
is Happening to our Seas?
Dr Floor Anthoni
June
2006
A
series of winter seminars by Dr Floor Anthoni, Seafriends
Most
fishermen must have noticed by now that fishing is not
as good as it used to be, and that things are getting
worse, despite all good intentions.
We see shellfish
beds disappearing and not coming back, even after years
of respite.
For those going
under the water, it has become clear that the species
we do not fish at all, like sponges and even seaweeds,
are also disappearing. |

Obviously, fishing is
not the only problem, so what is happening to our seas?
Dr Floor Anthoni from
the Seafriends Marine Conservation and Education Centre in Leigh,
well known for his extensive web site www.seafriends.org.nz, now
visited by over 1.5 million visitors each year, has made a twenty
year study of this phenomenon.
Degradation of the sea
is known under the more common name of eutrophication (over-nourishment)
which causes a mysterious disease in the sea, little understood
by scientists. But now Dr Anthoni has made epoch-making discoveries
that explain how it all happens as he also found a new scientific
method to measure it.

The
results of these findings are rather alarming, reason why
a series of seminars is held to inform community and business
leaders of its consequences.
New Zealand has
entered a new era in which conventional fisheries management
such as bag limits and the QMS, as also marine reserves,
can no longer be effective.
As the problems
grow like an invisible cancer, we must lose no time to act.
