MARINE FARMS PUBLIC MEETINGS 2004

Public Meetings - Marine Farms

Firth of Thames and Kawakawa Bay

April - May 2004

The Auckland Regional Council (ARC) is holding meetings in Kaiaua and Kawakawa Bay to discuss Aquaculture Management Areas (AMA's) in the Firth of Thames and Kawakawa Bay.

The ARC may introduce Aquaculture Management Areas (zones where marine farming can be undertaken) to the Regional Coastal plan. The ARC says that the Firth of Thames is an area that has some existing aquaculture areas and is an area of interest to the industry.

As part of the ARC's process it wishes to obtain the views of the community on this issue.

Significance

These meetings are extremely important to the community, residents, and affected groups. It is
vital that your views are expressed. A consortium of marine farmers are asking for more than 4,300 ha for marine farming from Martingarahi to Waharau and also at the Southern end of Ponui Island and the Sandspit.
