Points of Interest
1. Discussion paper was released in February 1991
2. Nearly 5000 distributed to every household on Great Barrier Island, visitors and other interested groups.
3. People were given three months to respond to the document
4. 256 submissions were sent in
a. 5.12% of total docs distributed
b. 4.88% were on the supplied questionnaire
c. 0.24% were written submissions.
5. No iwi or Maori organisations identified themselves in responses.
6. Maori “ raised some concerns, but indicated a general acceptance of the principle of marine reserves.”
7. Returned questionnaires
a. 56.97% from greater Auckland area
b. 19.67% from Great Barrier Island residents
c. 13.11% from North Auckland, Coromandel & Hauraki Gulf
d. 10.24% from rest of NZ & overseas
e. If more than 50% of the returns were from the greater Auckland area in 1991 then why are DoC not willing to organise any public meetings in Auckland for this process? There is an obvious interest from the greater Auckland population in the area.
8. Respondents involvement with the island is set out in the tables in the analysis.
9. Question regarding the frequency of visits to the north east coast of Great Barrier Island – 165 (66.26%) responded they visited frequently yet this is recorded in their analysis as “occasionally”.
