Barrier Costs 2006

Costs of Great Barrier (Aotea) Marine Reserve

Department of Conservation

26 June 2006

26 June, 2006

Dear Scott Macindoe

I refer to your official information request to Felicity Wong on 18 May 2006 concerning the Aotea (Great Barrier) marine reserve proposal and application. Your request was forwarded to me for reply.

You asked for:

".information concerning costs associated with:
      1. The Aotea marine reserve;
        1. Proposal, and
        2. Application
      2. Mimiwhangata marine reserve proposal".

This letter addresses the issue of costs associated with the Aotea (Great Barrier) Marine Reserve. Your request has been forwarded to Northland Conservancy for a response regarding the Mimiwhangata marine reserve proposal.

The department began work on the current Great Barrier marine reserve proposal in 2002 and the Aotea (Great Barrier) Marine Reserve Application was first notified on 2 August 2004.

The Department of Conservation did not record costs associated with the Great Barrier marine reserve proposal and application as a separate budget item. The project was included in a wider business plan that covered all marine reserve establishment work that Auckland Conservancy was undertaking. To provide the most accurate estimate of costs associated with the Great Barrier marine reserve proposal and application the following information has been listed below:

  • all costs recorded in the marine reserve establishment business plan by financial year, and
  • an estimate of the amount of time and resources in each financial year that were spent on the Great Barrier proposal.
