Foveaux
Strait Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management
2004
& 2005
NIWA were interested in studying ecosystem management in the Foveaux
Strait oyster fishery area. Two workshops were held in August 2004
to discuss the development of a research proposal with local stakeholders.
NIWA will be using the
Foveaux Strait as a case study to provide information on the processes
and critical relationships between the impacts of dredging and fisheries
production (oysters and blue cod) and the regeneration of benthic
habitat, and to develop strategies to mitigate and remedy these
effects.
option4 were excited by
this approach to marine protection in conjunction with fisheries
management, by NIWA. This proposal recognised the relationship between
shellfish, fish populations, habitat and associated species.
The following is a record
of the process to date. We will update this section as more information
becomes available.
If you have any information
relating to this proposal please email us at foveaux@option4.co.nz
