Auckland Conservation Board - New Appointments


Auckland Conservation Board Appointments

Conservation Minister Chris Carter today announced the appointments to the Auckland Conservation Board.

"I'm pleased to announce that Estella Lee, Peter Crabb, Tomui Kaloni and Thomas de Thierry are new appointments," said Mr Carter.

"I am confident the new make up of the board represents a broad spectrum of knowledge and a wide range of local communities and will give sound advice to the Department of Conservation on its policy and directions."

"Conservation boards play a vital role in providing independent advice on local conservation issues and a means for local communities to be a part of conservation decisions."

Department of Conservation Auckland Conservator, Rob McCallum, welcomed the new appointees to the Auckland Conservation Board.

"I look forward to working with the incoming members who will add a wealth of experience and skills to what has been a highly competent and committed board," he said. The new members will serve three year terms from 1 September 2004 .

Mr Carter thanked the Auckland retiring board members Margaret Kawharu, Anne Fenn, Mel Galbraith and Laly Haddon for their efforts and commitment during their time on the board.

New members:

Peter Crabb,

of Titirangi, has a strong background in marine biology. He currently works as a marine biologist for the New Zealand Underwater Association Inc. and brings knowledge of New Zealand's marine environment to the board.

Tomui Kaloni,

of Northcote, comes to the Board with international experience in the environmental and conservation business. He also brings important links to the Pacific Island community as well as a strong interest in community issues.

Thomas de Thierry,

of Manurewa, has recently worked on an iwi authority trust board and brings a good understanding of Tikanga Maori as well as the Treaty of Waitangi to the board. He is also a keen participant in outdoor recreation in New Zealand.

Estella Lee,

of Remuera, has affiliations with the Chinese Conservation Education Trust and connections to the Chinese community in Auckland. She demonstrates a strong interest in environmental, conservation and community issues.
