Statement - Kahawai
NZ Recreational Fishing Council
31
August 2004
Minor
parties betray the public of New Zealand
The Greens, ACT and NZ First
this evening betrayed New Zealand's recreational fishers, when they
voted against United Future's Larry Baldock sponsored supplementary
order paper to withdraw kahawai from the Quota Management System,
in the Fisheries No3 Amendment Bill, in Parliament today.
The recreational fishing
public and Council members are confused with a developing mistrust
of politicians when they (the politicians) speak with one view on
kahawai to members at its recent conference in Whangarei and yet
do the opposite in Parliament today August 31.
Kahawai was widely recognised
as the peoples fish, accessible to all New Zealanders until the
bulk fishing method of purse seining decimated our local fish stocks.
This single species represents a high economic, social and sustenance
value to the public of New Zealand.
For any politician who has
traded today this high public valued fish for political expediency,
they will have to explain their turn around actions to the voters
next year.
It should not be forgotten
that "we fish and we vote" said NZRFC President Keith Ingram.
