UNITED FUTURE RESPOND TO KAHAWAI SUBMITTERS

United Future's Response to Submitters

May 2004

Background

option4 Alert #6 was issued on 8 April 2004 to allow the public the opportunity to submit on the Ministry of Fisheries proposal to introduce kahawai into the Quota Management System. Submitters were offered the tools to enable their submission to be sent to the Ministry of Fisheries personnel involved in the process and to selected politicians including the opposition fisheries spokespeople.

United Future asks the Minister what's your plan?

Larry Baldock, United Future's fisheries spokesperson, has responsed to the concern surrounding the impending decision on the introduction of kahawai into the QMS on 1 October 2004. Those who emailed their submission, using the Alert # 6 submission tool, to Larry received the following response –

"Thank you for email expressing your concern about the decline in kahawai fish stocks.

As the United Future Spokesperson for fisheries I am replying on behalf of my colleagues. I will raise the matter at my next meeting with the Minister for Fisheries now scheduled for May 10th, and give you a report on the outcome of our discussions".

regards
Larry Baldock MP

Larry met with the Minister, David Benson – Pope, and also asked a question in the House. Larry has the following message for those who submitted.

Thanks again for your emails and concern about the kahawai fish stock. You have certainly made your concerns known here in Wellington very effectively.

I met with the Minister of Fisheries last Monday and followed up that discussion with an oral question in the House which I have copied below.

Larry Baldock : Does the Minister stand by his statements on The Radio Network show on Saturday, 1 May, hosted by Tim Dower, that he had been listening hard to the concerns of recreational fishermen with regard to their concerns about the apparent depletion of kahawai fish stocks; if so, what plans does he have to address those concerns when kahawai is introduced to the quota management system?

Hon DAVID BENSON-POPE : Yes. Submissions have recently closed-in fact, on 16 April-and officials are currently are preparing final advice for me. I expect to have that in June. I can confirm the statement I made on that radio programme that a robust decision on this matter can be expected.

At this point the Minister is waiting for a report from MFish and I will discuss the matter again when he receives that report.

regards
Larry Baldock MP
