Blue Cod 7 - Management Proposals

2007 to 2011

2010/11 Review - Area 7

Proposed re-opening of Sounds

The Ministry of Fisheries advised on 24 August 2010 that they were consulting on measures to support the early re-opening of the Marlborough Sounds blue cod fishery to amateur fishers.

A selected group has been working since 2009 to develop a range of measures to enable the fishery to be re-opened earlier than the original 1 October 2012 date.

Some of the 10 proposed measures are controversial. People are encouraged to send their submissions to MFish by the deadline of 4 October 2010.

Two highly-charged meetings to discuss the Ministry of Fisheries' blue cod management proposals for Marlborough Sounds attracted over 300 people in early April.

The Blenheim and Picton meetings criticised MFish for their poor consultation, inadequate research and their failure to organise public meetings prior to the April 23rd submission deadline.

MFish attended both meetings organised by the Marlborough Recreational Fishers Association.

There was overwhelming support for three motions put to the audience, including a resolution to write to Jim Anderton, Minister of Fisheries, and demand a six-month extension to the consultation process.

Proposals to close some parts of the Sounds to all amateur fishing was very unpopular. It would deny access to children and adults fishing for other species. Limiting amateur fishing while not addressing the impacts of commercial fishing was roundly condemned. Many locals believe the closures would not make any difference to the cod population, some even questioned if there was a depletion problem at all.

A majority at both meetings agreed that the MFish proposals be rejected outright and that new management measures be developed using sound research and in full consultation with the public.
