This is a brief report summarising the main issues discussed at the Hokianga Accord April 2013 hui. Also below are links to associated documents or sites relevant to these discussions.

Over the past six years the Hokianga Accord has worked with an alliance of various organisations and individuals to achieve "more fish in the water/kia maha atu nga ika ki roto i te wai".

Snapper 1 policy
At this hui the Hokianga Accord endorsed the NZ Sport Fishing Council Snapper 1 policy. Also, the Accord thanked the NZSFC for resourcing and developing the policy, to rebuild the depleted snapper fishery on the northeast coast, between North Cape and Cape Runaway, East Cape.

Shark finning
A resolution from this hui was that the Hokianga Accord supports the New Zealand Shark Alliance in seeking a ban on shark finning in New Zealand waters. Read more about the NZ Shark Alliance here......

FADs in purse seine fisheries
Purse seine fishing is common in Pacific waters. Some purse seine vessels are using up to 100 Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) each to attract tuna. Bycatch is a major issue related to FAD use. Read this Greenpeace blog on FAD bycatch.....

Revive our Gulf
An ambitious project to restore the mussel beds in the Hauraki Gulf. Historically mussel reefs were widespread and abundant. Those were annihilated. A multi-interest group is working to trial methods to restore the beds.
