The presence of visitors  was equivalent to the bestowal of a blessing upon the hosts. On the  part of the hosts, they bestowed a blessing upon the guests by giving them the  best of their provisions in the Hakari (banquet) and hospitality provided. This was a reciprocal relationship which could be extended by the exchange of gifts.
