KAHAWAI- MFISH

Kahawai - Documents

Minster and Ministry of Fisheries

2004 & 2005

2005

As promised late last year the Minister has decided to review his 2004 kahawai decision.

There is no significant new research available to base a new decision on.

The Ministry of Fisheries has offered two options in the Initial Position Paper (IPP), either stay with the decision the Minister made last year (status quo), or reduce commercial, recreational and customary allowances by 10% each (a proportional reduction) across all Quota Management Areas (QMAs).

The way this reduction is proposed has many of the same faults as the initial decision that we are challenging in the Kahawai Legal Challenge (KLC).

The Initial Position Paper is available in pdf in the table below.

Submissions

An online submission form will be made available within the next week to allow you the opportunity to make direct comments to the Ministry and Minister. If you have not already done so, please register your details so we can send you an email Alert when the submission form is online.

Time is very short and you only have until August 10th to submit to the proposals. Written or email submissions can be sent to:

The annual Total Allowable Catch will be reduced by 10% for kahawai. The reduction will be shared between all sectors but there will be no bag limit cuts for us as we can't catch our allowance anyway. Read more.....
