Kahawai
Legal Challenge
The legal challenge
to the Minister's 2004 kahawai decision was filed in the Auckland
High Court on Friday 12th August. The Hesketh Henry legal team
and Lyn Stevens QC reviewed the Statement of Claim and supporting
affidavits prior to the court action. We now wait a confirmed
hearing date; this is likely to be around the middle of 2006.
Kahawai
Campaign
The fundraising campaign
to back up the Kahawai Legal Challenge has been well supported
during August. The team placing campaign Booklets have made
over 1800 phone calls and successfully placed almost 700 booklets
in the hands of people who have said yes, we will Stand
and Fight.
The campaign has been
receiving steady support from the public with another run of
Booklets ordered and being distributed by the telephone calling
team. The call team assure us another order will be required
before the end of September, bring it on team!
Returned
Campaign Booklets
The countdown to the
end of the year is underway and all those who have had their
campaign booklets for some time now are being asked to give
it one last push and return the booklets to the campaign base,

Campaign
Publicity
The promotion of the
kahawai cause bands has improved the profile of the issue particularly
amongst younger people. We will be hoping to see an increase
in the 0900 KAHAWAI (52 42 92) activity to reflect the increased
distribution of the cause bands.
The increased profile
of the issue has seen some real staunch supporters calling the
0800 KAHAWAI (52 42 92) and asking for their own booklet. These
people are then going out to their local clubs, pubs, workplaces
and families and generating the financial support we require
to fund the legal challenge. We could not achieve the success
we have had to date without this staunch commitment from so
many people. Thank you all.
New
Kahawai Proposals
The Ministry of Fisheries
advised us in July that they had issued another Initial Position
Paper (IPP) seeking views on new proposals for kahawai management.
At the end of July MFish extended the submission deadline from
5 th to the 10 th August. This extension was welcomed with relief
as the legal team were struggling for time to review the submissions
put together by the NZ Big Game Fishing Council, the NZ Recreational
Fishing Council and option4. Submissions were sent to MFish
by the deadline and we are keen to read the Minister's decision
on all the species being reviewed this year, but kahawai in
particular.
www.kahawai.co.nz
31 new pages were loaded
onto the kahawai website during August. Most of the new pages
were related to the submission on the latest management proposals.
Full details of submissions can be read at the following address:
