3 April 2006

Kahawai Campaign

The Kahawai Legal Challenge team attended their first hui at Te Tii, Northland in May 2005. This event was captured on film and featured recently on the Tangaroa programme, Maori TV on March 19th. Whitiora Marae was the venue last May and the team is returning to Te Tii for another hui during the first week of April.

There are further television programmes underway but we have yet to receive confirmation of the dates they will be aired on screen.

Fundraising Booklets

Individuals still holding Kahawai Campaign Booklets are receiving follow up calls from the call team. Final results of the fundraising effort should be collated and available within the next few months. Supplies of the Booklets are almost exhausted and any new requests are being dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

If you need any help or more information please call 0800 KAHAWAI (0800 52 42 92) for assistance.

There have been some heroic efforts by individuals and clubs. Colin Murray, Wayne Bicknell and the Hawke’s Bay Sport Fishing Club raised almost $1500 through applying a levy to fishing contest fees. It is pleasing to have the people of Napier strongly supporting the Kahawai Legal Challenge.

If you still have your Booklet and feel you have done your best to raise funds for the Challenge please return the Booklet in the envelope provided in the support pack.

Thank you to all those who have already returned Campaign Booklets, your support is greatly appreciated.

Tee shirts

Stocks of tee shirts and wrist bracelets are still healthy. To order your $20 tee shirt or multiples for an upcoming event please call Jo Harris on 0800 KAHAWAI (0800 52 42 92).

0900 KAHAWAI

Calls to the 0900 KAHAWAI (0900 52 42 92) numbers have slowed down in recent weeks. If you do not have time to work through a Kahawai Booklet and would prefer an easier way to help the fundraising effort, please call 0900 KAHAWAI (0900 52 42 92). Follow the prompts to make an easy $20 donation. This will be billed to your telephone account. Please consider doing this more than once.

New Zealand Fishing World

Several articles of interest to recreational fishers were featured in the March-April issue of the New Zealand Fishing World magazine. If you haven’t read these items do yourself a favour and rush down to your local stationers to read an update from the Kahawai Challenge team on page 65.

A great article by Jeff Romeril on page 62 is also worth reading. In “Maori – Pakeha Co-operation Positive” Jeff has captured the essence of the value of Maori and non-Maori working together to achieve better outcomes for all non-commercial fishers, both recreational and customary.
