Kahawai
Campaign
Enthusiasm
for the Kahawai Campaign continues as we near the end
of the Booklet placement program. The call team managed
by Chloe Williams is on track to place the last of the
Booklets by Xmas or early in the New Year.
Follow up
calls to those still holding Booklets are being made
during the week by a team dedicated to this task.
It is great
to see most of the people contacted are still keen as
ever to give the Booklet a decent push over the Xmas
break.
Paul Barnes
and I will be working on a letter to Booklet holders
over the next week. Due to go out before Xmas we are
hoping it will be helpful for those about to go on holiday
with their Booklets. |

The good quality navy t-shirts are still
popular with many being ordered as Xmas gifts. At $20
per shirt this is good value. With the distinctive logo
on the front and back they make great team uniforms and
are being bought to wear at fishing contests by some keen
fishos. See more kahawai

Public Awareness
A joint option4/Kahawai
Campaign
Update was published in the December issue of the NZ Fishing
News. Focussed entirely on the proportional allocation ideology
being promoted by the Ministry of Fisheries the Update covered
the snapper 8 decision as a case study, the effects of proportionalism
on Maori and the hui of the Hokianga Accord.
A reporter and photographer from the
NZ Herald attended the third hui of the Hokianga Accord held
at Whakamaharatanga Marae, Hokianga. Christine Masters wrote
a very good article covering the hui that was published on Saturday
19th November. (see
Appendix One)
Legal Challenge
June 2006 is when the
court case challenging the Minister of Fisheries 2004 allocation
decision for kahawai is due to be heard in the High Court. Hesketh
Henry lawyers have been going flat out responding to the claims
by the commercial sector. A meeting between the lawyers and
the independent QC is due within the next week to discuss progress
and future strategy.
Acknowledgements
The challenge team of
the New Zealand Big Game Fishing Council, the New Zealand Recreational
Fishing Council and option4 appreciate all the effort that has
gone into making the campaign as successful as it is.
Asking people for money
is never an easy task but once they understand the challenge
is more than just about kahawai, that the outcome is expected
to have an impact on our ability to fish in the future then
people are more than happy to part with a few dollars as a donation
and buy a t-shirt at the same time.
A big thank you to those
who have dialled the 0900 KAHAWAI (52 42 92) over the past month.
Your $20 donation is appreciated. Unfortunately we do not have
the opportunity to talk to everyone in person but the team are
grateful for your support.
The secure
online donation facility is still available online. All
donations go directly into the Kahawai Challenge Fund.
November has been a very
busy month and at times the team have not responded to people's
offers of support as efficiently as we could have. We do appreciate
the offers, the support and the keenness to get stuck and help
out and will be doing our best to improve the level of responsiveness
in December.
The Challenge team
need your support to continue the campaign. If you have any
queries, t-shirt orders or need to know more information please
call 0800 KAHAWAI (52 42 92) and talk to one of our help team.
