Kahawai Legal Challenge Update
New Zealand Fishing News
March 2005 edition
The Minister of Fisheries,
David Benson-Pope has decided to allocate quota for kahawai to
a handful of commercial fishing companies as a reward for their
demolition of our kahawai stock. Recreational fishing leaders
are outraged at the kahawai decision and are certain the kahawai
fishery will continue to decline, making it even harder for non-commercial
fishers to catch a kahawai.
A legal case is being prepared
to challenge the injustice of the Minister's decision on behalf
of all recreational fishers. If we don't challenge the kahawai
decision and defeat the Ministry of Fisheries agenda to privatise
our fisheries we stand to lose in every other fishery we hold
dear.
The Campaign
The Campaign to support
the Kahawai Legal Challenge is underway - it will only succeed
if you commit and become actively involved.
A big thank you to those
who have already shown their commitment by supporting us in a
variety of ways, whether that has been with product, time, or
returning completed Kahawai Challenge Booklets. It is so heartening
to receive the Booklets filled with names of people who have invested
in the campaign, T-shirts orders and requests for more Booklets
to help with the fundraising. The level of commitment is encouraging.
What Can You
Do?
We have a range of roles
that need to be filled and you can make a difference by getting
involved. If you can help with any of the following please call,
leave a message on
0800 KAHAWAI (52 42 92)
or email us at contact@kahawai.co.nz
. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
The Heroes
Book Holders
The Kahawai Challenge team
can only reach a certain number of people so we are relying on
you to talk with your family, friends, work colleagues and your
fishing mates.
We have put together
a Supporters Pack that includes a Booklet and an A3 poster explaining
the issue. The Booklet contains 20 coupons (with receipts) that
allows you to get amongst people you know and explain the seriousness
of the situation, get them to invest in the campaign, order a
Challenge T-shirt and more importantly commit to ordering their
own Booklet.
Distributors
Without the dedication
of this team we would be struggling to reach people that are not
involved in fishing clubs. Over 90% of fishers do not align themselves
with any official club so the Distributors have taken on the responsibility
of getting the Challenge Booklets into their particular area.
If you are keen to be a Distributor in your area give us a call
or send an email.
Advocates
There are so many events
happening at this time of year but we just don't have the resources
to be present at every fishing contest, club meeting, on the boat
ramps or public gatherings. If you want to assist the campaign
by attending an event on behalf of the Challenge team please contact
us.
Suppliers
We have assembled a great
team of people and companies willing to assist in providing product,
staff time, expertise and advice at pro bono or very reduced rates.
If your business can help us with signage, printing, postage,
delivery, products, advertising or staff please call us so we
can discuss with you directly what we require.
Database
is everything
We regularly publish online
Updates so if you have a database that is available to receive
our emails relating to the Kahawai Legal Challenge feel free to
contact us for more information. Call 0800 KAHAWAI (52 42 92)
to talk to one of our team.
Financial Support
If you do not have the
time or availability to get involved then we have two easy ways
that you can invest in the effort that the team is making on your
behalf. Please give generously. Don't be left without an answer
when your grandchildren ask, "What did you do to try
and save our fisheries?"
