Legal Challenge Update New Zealand Fishing News

Anticipation was high that
the High Court judgement regarding the Kahawai Legal Challenge
would be released in February. However, we understand that the
issues are complex and the Challenge team now expect the ruling
to be available in March.
Many of the issues discussed during
the legal challenge are similar to those recently debated in the
Ministry of Fisheries 'Shared Fisheries' consultation round. (See
option4
Update #81).
Once the Court ruling is
received, analysed and discussed the team will be resubmitting
to MFish on their proposals to redefine non-commercial fishing
rights while avoiding addressing outstanding allocation issues.
We still have stock of
the “Putting up a fight for the kahawai” T-Shirts – they
are definitely going to be a proud shirt to wear as time goes
