The information obtained to date from the various regional offices
of the Ministry is in different formats and for this reason the
exact location and size of the taiapure and mätaitai reserves
are not presently available for some locations. The Ministry hopes
to be able to provide this very shortly.
The location of the reserves and the status of the committees is
set out below (where available).
PORANGAHAU (Sth Hawkes Bay)
Approved/gazetted in 1996, size about 42 km, committee
appointed, meets very regularly and carrying out a range of research
on local fisheries
PALLISER BAY (Sth Waiarapa)
Approved/gazetted in 1995, consists of two smaller areas,
size about 6 km, committee appointed and meets regularly
DELAWARE BAY (Noth East Nelson)
Approved/gazetted in 2002, size about 11 km, committee
appointed early 2003
MAKETU TAIAPURE (Bay of Plenty)
All that area of New Zealand fisheries waters enclosed
by a line commencing at the original mouth of the Wairakei Stream
at the northwestern corner of Taylor Reserve, Papamoa (at 37º
42.65'S and 176º 20.02'E) then running to a point (at 37º
42.15'S and 176º 20.42'E), then running generally parallel
to the mean high-water mark to a point (at 37º 44.85'S and
176º 26.20'E), then running as part of the circumference of
a circle with its centre at Okurei Point (at 37º 44.67'S and
176º 28.27'E) with a radius of 3000 metres to a point (at 37º
45.62'S and 176º 29.92'E), then running generally parallel
to mean high-water mark to a point (at 37º 49.46'S and 176º
35.91'E), then running to a point (at 37º 50.20'S and 176º
36.05'E) at the mean high-water mark, then running along the mean
high-water mark including the tidal waters of Waihi Estuary and
Maketu Estuary to the point of commencement.
KAWHIA AOTEA TAIAPURE (west coast north island)
All the waters in Area 1 plus all the waters in Area 2.
Area 1
All the marine and estuarine waters enclosed by a line-
(a) commencing from the mean high-water mark at Taranaki Point on
the west coast of the North Island (at 37º58.6'S, 174º46.8'E);
then
(b) following an arc of 2 nautical miles radius seaward from Potahi
Point (at 38º0.5'S, 174º47.7'E) to a point 38º1.8'S,
174º46.0'E; then
(c) proceeding in a southerly direction in a straight line to a
point 38º3.5'S, 174º45.5'E; then
(d) proceeding along an arc within a radius of 2 nautical miles
seaward from Urawhitiki Point (at 38º5.37'S, 174º46.22'E)
to a point 38º6.2'S, 174º43.8'E; then
(e) proceeding westerly along a line 1 nautical mile from the mean
high-water mark to a point 38º5.7'S, 174º41.1'E; then
(f) proceeding southerly in a straight line to the mean high-water
mark at Albatross Point on the west coast of the North Island (at
38º6.7'S, 174º41.1'E); then
(g) proceeding easterly along the mean high-water mark of the coast
and within the waters of Kawhia Harbour to Waiharakeke Stream (at
38º9.11'S, 174º51.35'E); then
(h) proceeding to Awaroa River (at 38º5.48'S, 174º55.22'E);
then
(i) proceeding northerly to Te Kauri Stream (at 38º4.5'S, 174º55.26'E);
then
(j) proceeding to Oparau Stream (at 38º3.15'S, 174º54.67'E);
then
(k) proceeding westerly to Mangaroa Stream (at 38º2.3'S, 174º51.51'E);
then
(l) proceeding to Manawatuhatuha Stream (at 38º2.47'S, 174º50.41'E);
then
(m) proceeding northerly along the mean high-water mark of the coast
and easterly within the waters of Aotea Harbour to Makomako Stream
(at 37º57.8'S, 174º53.84'E); then
(n) proceeding northerly to Pakoka Stream (at 37º55.92'S, 174º51.13'E);
then
(o) proceeding westerly and northerly to the point of commencement
at the mean high-water mark at Taranaki Point (at 37º58.6'S,
174º46.8'E).
Area 2
All the marine and estuarine waters within 1 nautical mile radius
centred on Gannet Island (at 37º58.3'S, 174º34.0'E).
WAIKARE INLET TAIAPURE (Bay of Islands)
All that area of New Zealand fisheries waters enclosed
by a line commencing at Tapu Point (at 35º 18.62' S, 174º
7.43' E), then proceeding in a south-easterly direction along a
line to Motutokape Island (at 35º 18.97' S, 174º 7.95'
E), then to a point on the mainland (at 35º 19.0' S, 174º
07.7' E), then proceeding along the line of the mean high water
mark including Kaurinui and Waikino Creeks and the Waikare Inlet
back to the point of commencement.
In addition information as to the gazetted regulations for taiapures
was requested. As at 28 February no regulations had been gazetted.
