The potential for large reductions to bag limits are evident in some of the Ministry's most recent proposals.

The Ministry of Fisheries are currently consulting on the future management of snapper, kahawai, kingfish, mullet, flounder, scallops and dogfish. The Ministry are also promoting a grossly unfair proportional allocation system that could lead to the recreational sectors allowances being set at half the level of the current catch. Recreational Fishing Regulations are also being reviewed.

option4 have just finished putting together draft submissions for the snapper 8 (west coast North Island), kingfish 8 (west coast North Island), flounder and mullet (west and east coast North Island) and a powerful submission to cover the unfair proportional proposals.

If you have any interest in protecting recreational fishing, you need to act quickly to make sure your voice is heard. All submissions have provision to accept your comments.

Your response to these submissions is URGENTLY required.

Proportional Allocation

The Ministry is also promoting a grossly unfair proportional allocation system that could lead to the recreational sectors allowances being set at half the level of the current catch.

Snapper 8 (west coast North Island)

The west coast snapper fishery is currently at half the stock size required in the Fisheries Act. The fishery must be rebuilt. Recreational bag limits and size limits are also being reviewed.

Flounder 1 (Top half North Island)

There are concerns that the flounder fishery is being overfished. Commercial fishers have been allocated vastly excessive quotas since 1986. Find out how the Ministry have proposed a "Claytons" cut to reduce commercial quotas without reducing the actual commercial catch.

Of great concern to option4 is the Ministry have used outdated recreational catch figures on which they have based a recreational "allowance". MFish have clearly stated they intend to constrain recreational fishers within the new allowance. This could mean massive bag limit cuts.

Grey Mullet 1 (Top half North Island)

Similar to flounder, grey mullet commercial fishers have been allocated vastly excessive quotas since 1986. Find out how the Ministry have proposed a "Claytons" cut to reduce commercial quotas without reducing the actual commercial catch.

MFish has only proposed actual cuts to recreational bag limits.

Kingfish 8 (west coast North Island)

Commercial fishers have been catching in excess of their quota on the west coast. MFish have proposed commercial fishers should be able to release live kingfish that are likely to survive.
